The Kher (The House)
The Romanó Kher (Casa Romaní) is a meeting space from which work is carried out on the recovery, promotion and dissemination of Romani memory and culture.
In Barcelona there was no place of reference where the creation of the intercultural dialogue was built in the first person. Therefore, the main objective of the Kher is to generate positive interaction and critical awareness among people of diverse origins and cultures through our projects and activities. The talks, exhibitions, workshops, film-forum and the Café Romaní, promote a space for analysis, debate and reflection on the past and present, causes and consequences as well as other current issues; paying special attention to the Roma people.
On the other hand, the Kher is offered as an Information Point that can serve as a place of empowerment, transmission of knowledge, teaching and dissemination of materials and resources for those with a special interest in our history.
La Romanó Kher is located in the heart of Barcelona's Gothic Quarter.
Roma language and our actions
In order to avoid the extinction of the Romani language, highlight and change the situation in Spain, one of the countries with the largest presence of the Romani population and which, however, has the lowest percentage of Romani speakers in Europe. We highlight the following actions:
Research on the Romani language, its differences, its use in Spain, with the collaboration of the University of Barcelona, and the Professor of Indo-European Linguistics, Ignasi Xavier Adiego Lajara.
Romani Language Days, focused on spreading knowledge of the language and celebrating its history
Romani courses for children and adults with the collaboration of the Unión Romaní.
Compilation of a bilingual Spanish-Romanian dictionary.
Publishing of Romani teaching manuals.
Documentation and Linguistic Resources Center "Romani Chib" of the Romani language that is the point of reference for the Romani language, its research, cataloging and use.
Translation of documents into the Romani language.
